I received a phone call in June 2020 that confirmed my belief in sage.
More on this in a bit!!
Smudging is the process of using smoke from natural substances or medicinal plants for cleansing, protection and healing. These natural substances include incense, sage, palo santo, rosemary, dragons blood, lavender, Yerba Santa, cedar, juniper.
In March 2019, I visited a friends liquor store (one of the few) with the intention of cleansing the store. His store has heavy foot traffic in an average part of the city. I knew the energies that visited the store, so the store needed the protection.
So I arrived to battle with my singular 4” white sage stick. Before lighting up, I play a mantra in my headset or chant one in my mind through the whole process. This helps stay present in the moment through the process of cleansing, while purifying our thoughts and one more benefit that I’ll mention later.
I smudge myself first, purifying my energy, clearing my mind of past thoughts and coming into the present. This is essential in the process to ensure that your past energy, thoughts and emotions don’t interfere with the cleansing process.
I go through each space reaching as far high as possible and going down to the floor, blowing through the sage to reach all corners. This purifies the air, removes harmful bacteria in the air (it’s been proven – link here), and removes negative energy. As the energy changes in the space, the mantra and/or chanting infuses the space with positive energy. I listen to Om chanting, the Gayatri Mantra or the Ganesh Mantra on YouTube. If you have an audio downloaded on your phone, that would be best. If you use YouTube, you’ll be skipping ads every 15 minutes (I’ve done this too!).
After 30 mins, the space was cleansed and I was out of there. I didn’t hear anything about it or didn’t think about it until I received a call in June 2020. During the peak of the Black Lives Matter, several of the riots occurred in the same city as the store. My friend in a panic rushes to his store to get it boarded up before the riot came through.
Incidentally, one of the riots passed in front of the liquor store. All the neighboring stores were boarded as well. The liquor store remained intact and survived the looters without a scratch. Some of the neighboring establishments were broken in and looted. Then he reminds me that this was the store that was smudged!
Since then, I regularly burn incense at home, at least once a day. I give my spaces a deep cleanse once a month with white sage or palo santo.
Have you smudged yet?
